There are risks for elevated heart rate in certain patients, and pregnant women are decidedly off-limits, due to concern for birth defects. The product was pulled from the market for heart risks and other side effects. But the expert panel, in the end, did an about-face and recommended approval of the drug two years later in a vote that could only be described as an overwhelming majority.
But some familiar concerns, akin to PPH and Fen-Phen, are back. Originally dubbed Qnexa, ABC News reports that the FDA required manufacturer Vivus to alter the name to avoid confusion with similarly-named drugs. The Fen-Phen of today, so to speak, is the weight-loss drug Qsymia. In 1984, researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center reported that they had performed a double-blind, controlled clinical trial comparing phentermine alone, fenfluramine alone, a combination of phentermine and fenfluramine, and placebo, for weight loss in humans. Overweight Americans who have used Qsymia have said they are less hungry, and food tastes different--enough to foster a desire to eat less. This disease typically involves the aortic and mitral valves. The manufacturer says the new drug must be used in concert with a healthy diet and exercise. Adverse effects were less frequent with the combination regimen than with the other active (non-placebo) treatments. As of 1997, the FDA was continuing to receive reports of valvular heart disease in persons who had taken these drugs. In April 2005, American Lawyer magazine ran a cover story on the wave of fen-phen litigation, reporting that more than 50,000 product liability lawsuits had been filed by alleged fen-phen victims. But there are similarities with the Fen-Phen of old. Thus, severe obesity is, in itself a health risk.
